This is the story of how Sara Gerow came to be your yoga teacher.
Sara Gerow graduated from the University of Calgary in 2005, where she had earned a degree in English. She then embarked on a career in human resources in the public sector. It was a good job with a pension. It was safe and secure and yet lacked the satisfaction she was craving.
Sara wasn’t aware of how unsatisfying her life was until she walked out of her first Bikram yoga class in 2010. This first experience in the hot room was bittersweet. As painful as it was, when it was over, she signed up for a membership. At that time, she had no idea the extent to which that experience would impact her life. Unbeknownst to her, she had entered the belly of the whale.
Within the Belly of the Whale
In the years that followed, Sara continued to face challenges and major changes in her life. She saw the end of her first marriage, the end of her career in human resources and experienced a major shift in her lifestyle due to her drastic decrease in income. Along the way, Sara learned from many individuals and many sources. She chose to see each challenge as an opportunity and in doing so, transformed her life into one of fulfillment.
A yoga practice reflects the challenges that people face in their lives. The journey is one whereby an individual develops the ability to break through their physical and mental barriers. Sara adheres to a strict regimen of daily yoga practice but stays flexible. She knows, that within her yoga practice, she practices life.
For the challenges of life don’t go away. Life is hard. As soon as a person overcomes one challenge, they are set on course to the next. With each experience they are preparing for an even greater challenge and so it continues. The same is true within a yogi’s practice. Once the practitioner becomes comfortable, it is time again to move forward. While the temptation to stay comfortable is great, it is imperative the practice maintains forward momentum.
From Student to Yoga Teacher
Once Sara developed her yoga practice to a certain point, she was ready to become a yoga teacher. It was a big leap, to go from student to teacher. And during Bikram Teachers Training in 2014, she had to let go of everything she thought she was and begin to step into who she was meant to be. The completion of teachers training was one of Sara’s biggest accomplishments, and provides her with a wealth of confidence and strength even to this day.
Once Sara had fulfilled her dream of being a full-time yoga instructor, she realized that there was still more to take on. Sara graduated from Mount Royal University as a Registered Massage Therapist in 2018. Her knowledge of anatomy and understanding of physiology gave her new insight into the workings of the human body especially in relation to yoga. Her practical and personal experience with yoga, has also complimented her growing massage therapy practice.
A person’s yoga practice reflects their life and how they view the world around them. Sara has developed a yoga practice that reflects the freedom and fulfillment in her life. She has developed a career that is as challenging and satisfying as her yoga practice. And most important, these avenues of expression have allowed her to discover her true self. She aspires to be a truly extraordinary woman. A mother, wife, daughter, friend, teacher and health practitioner.
This Extraordinary Life
Sara is grateful for her all her experiences and the path that has led her to this moment in time. Like many people, the Covid-19 lockdown has impacted Sara’s career greatly. It forced the closure of her massage practice and her home yoga studio. And yet with this challenge, came a huge opportunity for Sara.
First, to establish a home yoga practice now 10-years after her first class. In doing so, she has re-established her daily yoga practice and is still able to be a steady presence at home for her 1 year old son. The second opportunity was to expand her business to include offering online yoga class and starting her a blog. Her website now combines her love of teaching, writing and yoga. Along the way she discovered that her website was the perfect avenue to continue teaching as well as share her experiences and knowledge regarding yoga, anatomy, physiology and more
